First, we have to stop being complacent about the rate of reduction in consumption, and accept we have slow rates of reduction in prevalence. At this rate, smoking could take a century to clear.
Secondly, decide whether to let smoking stay as part of our culture, or aim for a smokeless society. Many think this is where are heading anyway.
1.
Thirdly, let’s not confuse pessimism with the action plan. It does not need to take 30-40 years –  it can actually be done in much less time, for example, 5-15 years.
In more detail: Smoking can be made history -
If graphic health warnings become law
If Parliament is prepared to legislate to ensure
Cigarette nicotine content is reduced 1.6 mg annually for 10 years, and
Smokers can buy fast acting nicotine products instead of cigarettes.
If Government and Maori Party and Greens agree to bring a Smokers Choices Bill to the Health Select Committee for full consideration by all community and stakeholder groups.
If research funders and Ministry of Health are supportive.
If Ministry of Health
Renews its top level commitment to reducing the cigarette deaths epidemic.
Doubles its allocations for tobacco control, with increased quit media advertising and information for smokers, and up to date monitoring.
If medical and health groups unite in supporting these moves.
